Aftercare Instructions

Tooth Extraction
After a tooth extraction:
- Keep the gauze in place and replace it as directed.
- Rest and avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 hours.
- Apply an ice pack to help reduce swelling.
- Eat soft foods and avoid chewing near the extraction site.
- After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water.
- Do not touch the area with your tongue or fingers.
- Avoid smoking and drinking through straws, as these can increase the risk of dry socket.
- Take prescribed or recommended pain medication as directed.
Extraction healing commonly takes approximately three to seven days, although recovery time can vary.
Root Canal
It is normal for the treated tooth to feel sensitive for a few days after root canal treatment.
- Avoid chewing on the treated side until your dentist says it is safe.
- Be especially careful when a temporary filling is in place.
- Take any prescribed pain medication according to the instructions.
- Attend your follow-up appointment for the permanent filling or crown.
- Contact the office if discomfort continues or becomes severe.
A root-canal-treated tooth may need a permanent filling or crown once healing is confirmed.
Dental Implants
Dental implants require regular oral hygiene similar to natural teeth.
- Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Floss around the implant or use an implant-cleaning aid.
- Avoid very hard or sticky foods that could damage the crown.
- Keep regular dental cleaning and examination appointments.
- Follow any special surgical instructions given by the dentist.
Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits support the long-term health of dental implants.
Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom-tooth aftercare follows the same basic instructions as other extractions:
- Rest after the procedure.
- Use gauze as instructed.
- Apply ice to help manage swelling.
- Eat soft foods.
- Avoid straws, smoking, and strenuous activity.
- Follow the dentist's instructions regarding rinsing and medication.
