The Importance of Baby Teeth

Why baby teeth deserve real care — and how to protect them.

Many parents think of baby teeth as a temporary step needing minimal care. The truth is baby teeth play an essential role in a child's growth and set the path for permanent teeth.

Baby teeth matter

Baby teeth start growing before a child is born. The first signs of erupting teeth may appear as early as three months, with a growth spurt after six months — and the full set usually in place by age three. This is when you'll begin brushing a child's teeth and monitoring habits like thumb sucking, which can impact tooth growth.

Thumb sucking

Consistent thumb sucking works like braces in reverse: it applies gentle, constant pressure that can push teeth out of a straight position into a crooked one, to better accommodate the thumb. Understanding this helps you address it early.

Controlling the impulse

Reduce thumb sucking gradually rather than going cold turkey — allow it in the bedroom or while sleeping. If it's a coping mechanism during stress, develop other strategies. Use a reward system with praise and treats for sustained periods without it. If it's mostly stopped except at night, try gloves or another barrier while sleeping.
